Warner Music Group is promoting a new artist who is delivering the truth by way of guitar & his soulful voice & thank heavens, we need this- a unique experience that features guitar + has a strong label behind an artist. We’re speaking about Gary Clark Jr. We attended a very intimate performance at The Sayer’s Club in Los Angeles, California and joined the standing room as we stood in awe of Gary’s deep & satiating guitar playing. Get to know Gary, watch him performing “Bright Lights” at the Crossroads Festival & download his record for $4 (below)

GuitarTV- Where are you coming from, geographically & what can you tell us about your influences?

Gary- COMING FROM NYC AT THE MOMENT. ABOUT TO DO THIS MEMORIAL FOR HUBERT SUMLIN AT THE APOLLO. HUBERT WAS ACTUALLY A BIG INFLUENCE ON ME. BUT I’VE DRAWN INFLUENCE FROM LOTS OF MUSICIANS RANGING FROM CURTIS MAYFIELD TO NIRVANA TO OUTKAST TO JONI MITCHELL. ANYTHING I’VE BEEN EXPOSED TO IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER HAS INFLUENCED ME…

GuitarTV- Do you see a gap between music being embraced culturally now & pure and honest guitar playing?

Gary- I DON’T REALLY UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION. SOUND IS SOUND. WHEN SOMEONE CREATES MUSIC, IT’S AN OBVIOUS EXPRESSION OF AN IDEA.. WHEN A PIECE IS CONTRIVED, IT’S PRETTY CLEAR TO ANYONE LISTENING CLOSELY. PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR THE TRUTH DEEP DOWN.

GuitarTV- And where will we find you?

Gary- I’M JUST TRYING TO PUT WHAT I’M FEELING OUT THERE. IT’S CERTAINLY HONEST, BECAUSE IT IS WHAT I’M FEELING.

GuitarTV- What is your live setup like? (I think we saw a Vibro-King, an Epi semi-hollow with P-90′s and possibly a Z.Vex stompbox).

Gary- YEAH, I USE A FENDER VIBROKING, EPIPHONE CASINO ELITIST, AND VARIOUS PEDALS I LIKE TO PLAY AROUND WITH.

GuitarTV- Few ‘guitar players’ make a transition to becoming ‘an artist.’ Were you ever strictly a guitar player- as a sideman in a band? If so, can you tell us how writing & publishing songs on a record label have changed your view of the role of the guitar in a song?

Gary- LIKE I SAID, I’M JUST TRYING TO PUT SOME STUFF OUT THERE THAT I’M FEELING. I’VE NEVER TAKEN THE TIME TO PUT A TITLE ON MYSELF FOR THIS OR THAT. I’VE WORKED WITH A LOT OF DIFFERENT CATS OUT THERE, AND I’VE JUST SQUEEZED IN WHEREVER I FELT I WAS NEEDED IN A PARTICULAR SETTING. AS FAR AS WRITING AND PUBLISHING SONGS IS CONCERNED, I DON’T WRITE OR PUBLISH THROUGH THE RECORD LABEL. I ACTUALLY OWN ALL OF MY OWN PUBLISHING/SONGWRITING.

GuitarTV- Your right-hand is amazing– It’s own entity! Some players get really caught up on speed, intricacies with their left (or fretboard) hand. What can be said about driving a song, keeping the time with your right hand?

Gary- REALLY JUST DEPENDS ON WHERE THE ENERGY TAKES IT. IT’S ITS OWN THING THAT GOES WHERE IT FREELY PLEASES. MY HAND JUST KEEPS UP WITH IT AS NEEDED.. I HOPE! HA!

GuitarTV- Is there an ideal collaboration for you? An artist/band/one-off night/full-fledged position?

Gary- WOW, THERE ARE SOOOO MANY ARTISTS OUT THERE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE THAT I RESPECT AND WOULD LOVE TO WORK WITH IN A PERFECT WORLD. ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT RIGHT NOW HOWEVER IS JUST WORKING AND FINISHING UP ON THIS ALBUM THAT I HOPE WILL BE COMING OUT SOMETIME IN SEPTEMBER.
